Keith Hamilton Cobb explores the complexities of Othello in American Moor.
Keith Hamilton Cobb first discovered Shakespeare when he was in community college pursuing an English degree. “I realized that it was far less a literary form than it was a theatrical form, to be lived rather than read,” says the actor. “It is the use of language to express much of what would otherwise be inexpressible that draws me to Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s plays are theater for lovers of language.”In fact he was always drawn to the English language when spoken.
“American Moor is the African American male experience through the metaphor of Shakespeare’s character, Othello,” says Cobb of the play that is Presented by Red Bull Theater and directed by Kim Weild. “If that doesn’t interest you, then it is a play about love. It’s a play about art. It’s a play about love of art, and not only whose lives matter, but whose art matters. It’s a play about all of our American lives and the future that we share.
Audiences across every race, age, and sexual spectrum have consistently been deeply effected by this play over the past many years of its development. There is no one thing, or set of things that I would hope to have people come away from the experience with, as each audience member has been uniquely moved. American Moor is a play about all of us. And what seems to move audience members most is the recognition of themselves in the story.
Brunner: When you perform Shakespeare you make the text so relatable. So many actors are intimidated by his prose. How do you approach performing Shakespeare? Shakespeare wrote about human beings, just like any other playwright. If one is any sort of an actor, seeing the likenesses between the humanity of Shakespeare’s characters and one’s own should be the easy part.
