Two SUVs and a conventional sedan buff out the Crown line.
is a head-scratcher on its own, it's not the most befuddling Crown-related news item to land in the past 24 hours. No, that honor goes to the new lineup of Crown-badged, premium Toyota models introduced simultaneously for global markets. In addition to, Japan and Europe also are getting a conventional sedan version, a sport wagon model, and a traditional SUV.
Now, these are"design concepts," but they preview models that Toyota has confirmed will go on sale elsewhere, likely based on the same TNGA-K architecture as the Crown crossover sedan thing , and we believe they won't change much on the road to production. More importantly, all three are way more compelling than the weirdo sedan-UV version Toyota chose to sell to Americans. The sport wagon, which is really more like a hot crossover, in particular is a standout.
Toyota adamantly believes the 2023 Crown will help keep full-size sedan buyers from fleeing to SUVs. Whether the unconventional Crown accomplishes that mission remains to be seen, but here's a thought: Maybe sell them this instead? Just give in and, dunno, offer them more SUVs, especially some that look like this concept. Here's a kicker: An actual sedan! The 2023 Crown we're getting is sedan-adjacent, neither fully a car nor fully an SUV, and looks all the stranger for it.
