Seniors’ health varies widely around the world, with a full 30-year chasm between the countries with the highest and lowest ages that people experience the health issues of the average 65-year-old, according to a new study published in the international medical journal The Lancet Public Health. For example, in Japan and Switzerland it’ll take until age 76 to get those issues, while in Papua New Guinea you’d have the same level of health-related issues at 46.
Though Japan and Switzerland have the same age , Switzerland may slightly best Japan because older Japanese people seem to have a slightly higher health burden than older people in Switzerland, said Joe Dieleman, an assistant professor of health metrics sciences at The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation , an independent global health research organization at the University of Washington, and the paper’s senior author.
This all matters because “age-related health problems can lead to early retirement, a smaller workforce, and higher health spending,” said Angela Y. Chang, lead author and postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Health Trends and Forecasts at the University of Washington, in a statement. ← moved this up
