Readers on this day in 1938 learned of an antisemitic pogrom carried out by the Nazis against Jews in Germany.
, or the Night of the Broken Glass, a two-day wave of violence was unleashed on Jewish populations in Germany, annexed Austria and parts of the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. Hundreds of synagogues were destroyed and Jewish businesses were looted. Even Jewish cemeteries were desecrated. Up to 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps.
The violence was set off following the assassination of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath in Paris a few days earlier. Herschel Grynszpan, a 17-year-old Polish Jew who learned that his parents had been expelled from Germany, was arrested in the shooting. What happened to Grynszpan in the ensuing years is uncertain.
The news came one day after voters in America dealt a setback to Democrats and President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal policies in the 1938 midterms.
