Goodyear shows off sustainable tires at CES 2023.
, around 6.1 million metric tons of tire dust ends up in our waterways and air every year. Additionally, tire dust is one of the leading causes of increasing microplastic levels in our oceans. In order to try and cut back on the damage caused by these products, Goodyear is looking at perfecting alternatives to our more traditional tire compounds.
Silica for improved grip is sourced from rice husk waste, while ISCC-certified mass balance polymers are sourced from bio- and bio-circular feedstock. The steel cords inside the tire contain highly recycled materials and are also produced using the electric arc furnace process. This is a more efficient and cleaner method of steel production than a blast furnace, which helps cut back on greenhouse gas emissions.
That compound is slated to enter production sometime in 2023. The brand wants to sell tires made from 100 percent sustainable materials by the end of the decade. As long as the tires can still provide the characteristics we all expect, this seems like a net win for everyone involved. Born and raised in Metro Detroit, associate editor Lucas Bell has spent his entire life surrounded by the automotive industry.
