and ran as a guide for a visually impaired man the last few New York City Marathons before he passed. He intentionally scheduled his last surgery, his last tumor resection, the day after the New York City Marathon. There was no way he was going to miss it.
As you continued through college and nursing school and did more marathons, what role would you say running played in your life?. After college, I moved to Ireland for a few years and ran all the major Irish marathons. My brother was the only survivor. He was unable to walk for six months and had to do intense rehab. With the stress of being responsible for so much—going to Iowa, getting him, figuring out health insurance—I hit a very low point. I went through a bad breakup then too. There was just too much going on for me.
My one ultramarathon was in Northern Ireland in 2015. I had a friend who I got very close to when I was living there who died from a cerebral aneurysm. My friends and I got together and started a nonprofit to fundraise for a research grant for Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. My initial goal was $1,000, $1 a mile. I met that goal on the first day. People were just all stuck at home, and they felt the same way I did, they wanted to do something.
In my last two marathons, Berlin and New York, I ran 3:14. I would love to do a sub-three. I think I need to focus more on endurance and distance right now, but if I was able to improve my level of fitness so that I could start decreasing my times further in order to meet that goal eventually, I would be thrilled.A few weeks ago, my good friend Barry texted me.
