Those in his hometown say it’s his Central Valley roots that may hold the key to how Josh Allen made it big.
“It was the first time I heard someone articulate so well what it’s like to be from somewhere where people underestimate you — and using that as a strength.”
But Allen surprised Jenkins, the first in a long line of coaches to underestimate him because of his size. Much of the town still talks about the upset Allen pulled off during his senior year of high school, during a game dedicated to his grandfather, the school gym’s namesake, who had died a month before.
His first-choice college was Fresno State; he had attended football camps there every year since middle school. But the school didn’t offer him a scholarship. Neither did any other Division I program. “He wanted to be a Bulldog so badly,” Beto Gallegos, Allen’s former Pop Warner coach, told SFGATE., he enrolled at the local junior college, Reedley, about an hour away. He wasn’t quite ready to hang up his football cleats.
