Felix DeJesus remains missing after Paterson police officers detained him on Feb. 2. Then, left him at nearby Westside Park. He has not been seen since.
DeJesus joins Black men like Jelani Day, who went missing in August 2021 in Illinois; Daniel Robinson, who disappeared in Arizona in June 2021; and Xavion Smith, who vanished in Colorado in September 2021. Their cases received attention after criticism of the media’s intense focus last year on the disappearance of Gabby Petito, a white YouTube influencer whose boyfriend murdered her.The disparate treatment of people of color has drawn the attention of Hollywood.
Paterson has a history of troubled police-community relations that often put the police and the residents they serve at odds. The DeJesus family has hired lawyer, Jeff Patti, who has threatened to file a lawsuit against the city over its handling of DeJesus’ detention. What little they know, they say, they’ve patched together through their own efforts.
The day he was last seen was a Wednesday. Grullon wasn’t feeling well and was admitted to the hospital, the family said. She needed personal items from home, so DeJesus called a cab and took them to her around 3 p.m. Afterward, DeJesus made his way to La Bodega Parada at Union Avenue and Marion Street. His family says the store owner told them DeJesus tried to buy a sandwich but was asked leave after touching a woman on the shoulder.
The family said they canvassed the park, where police say they left him. But they doubt DeJesus would have asked to be taken there because it wasn’t a place he knew or frequented. The family said they spoke with a few people who described seeing a shivering man who fit DeJesus’ description.
