‘For right or for wrong, it’s a kick in the belly’: Tree removal at Brackenridge Park delayed a week

Birds nest in the large oak trees at the egret and heron rookery in Brackenridge Park outside the San Antonio Zoo on Thursday, May 18, 2017. MARVIN PFEIFFER/ [email protected] leaders are struggling with an issue that pits the preservation of historic man-made structures against trees in Brackenridge Park, with an element of safety also at stake.

In some cases, the tree removal also would prevent a threat to public safety, according to Assistant City Manager David McCary. He said the city is trying to make up for deferred maintenance in the park, which is rich with cultural resources and memories for local residents. “We see a project which is probably really good at repairing walls. But I’m not so sure it’s good in protecting the environment,” Reed said. “This project needs to slow down.”

With another bond vote looming in May, Hill said the tree removal undermines trust with local voters. Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert registered his concern by voicemail, “at a time that our tree is being decimated and climate change threatens our way of life.” He asked the city to delay the tree removal “for proper environmental preservation and to make sure the plan is consistent with the city’s climate action plan.”
