A pre-Halloween alternative to traditional haunts, the recently reopened museum features artifacts about famous murders and serial killers.
Halloween is coming, but at the Museum of Death in Hollywood, it’s business as usual.
“We’ve just put out letters from Richard Ramirez, Otis Toole, and John Wayne Gacy so people can read them,” says Healy, recalling that Schulz stopped corresponding when Night Stalker Ramirez asked for a picture of her feet. “But we’re not about gore and titillating shock tactics,” Healy insists. “I could certainly make it that way, but our aim has always been to teach about death, and to show how society views death across different cultures and generations.”
“Death is a constant in life, and they wanted you to have their name and phone number close to hand,” he notes simply.Other sections look at suicide, executions, the Nuremberg trials and more, while a bunkbed and clothes from the Heaven’s Gate cult suicide in 1997 stops you in your tracks, especially since a video of some of the members happily discussing their soon-to-come elevation plays alongside.
Perhaps the grandest item is a highly-detailed painting completed over 18 months by noted artist Joe Coleman, who uses a jeweler’s lens and a single-strand brush. Framed with coins, flint arrowheads, bullets and teeth, the subject at the center is Swift Runner, a Native American cannibal.
