This ‘stork’ delivers vital cargo into space and pride back in Japan paid Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

The vital cargo is traveling on board the H-II Transfer Vehicle , a spacecraft known as “Kounotori,” which is Japanese for “white stork.”It’s the eighth such resupply mission since 2009 for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries , which makes Kounotori as well as the massive rocket carrying it into space, the H-IIB launch vehicle.

Fifteen minutes after Tuesday’s liftoff, Kounotori broke free of the rocket and headed for the station. A week from now, guided by its avionics and propulsion modules, the transfer vehicle will arrive. It has the largest load capacity — 6.2 tons —of any vehicle supplying the ISS. On its 2018 mission, featured in this video, Kounotori included a re-entry module, which splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, bringing back scientific samples, the first time Japan had achieved that milestone.

In that sense, Kounotori delivers not only cargo with each voyage to the station but also a sense of national pride for the country’s expanding space industry.
