This was the very first time they designed a locomotive and cars for New Jersey

A volunteer at the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey's open house last September waits to help people tour the last U-34CH locomotive that the group is restoring. The locomotive and train it pulled was the technological equivalent to the iPhone for commuter trains.A train that did for commuters what the iPhone did for cell phones has been sleeping for years in Boonton.

“The goal in September is it will look like it did in 1971,” Phalon said. “Then we will do the heavy work.” The technology it pioneered was called push-pull, which allowed commuter trains to be operated without having to move the locomotive to the opposite end. The U-34CH and its train were the first mass production rail equipment to use that and “head end power” where the locomotive powered heating, air conditioning and lights with electricity.Commuters in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s rode a fleet of rolling antiques.

The state then turned to General Electric to create and build 32 unique locomotives between 1970 and 1973 to haul and power the train. The dieseliner cars were the basis for the familiar single-level Comet commuter cars used by NJ Transit and Metro North What’s the big deal? Everything thing about the locomotive and its trains is a story of Jersey’s tenacity and innovation.
