Three San Antonio council members leave meeting ahead of criminal justice reform vote

and several organizations have lined up against it, including the Texas attorney general.

“I felt like it doesn’t adequately express to the public when they go to vote what they’re actually voting for, and I have a real problem with putting a petition out there for people to vote on if they really won’t understand all of the implications,” Courage said. The proposition also expands the city’s existing cite-and-release program to all state-eligible Class C misdemeanors and bans police from using chokeholds or no-knock warrants. A justice director would be appointed to oversee the implementation of these policies.

The charter election will coincide with the May 6 municipal election, when all 10 City Council seats and the mayor are up for election.
