The Prince William County police are investigating a shooting near an athletic field at Benton Middle School, police said.
Prince William County police could not immediately say what prompted the shooting but said the scene was secure. Officer Renee Carr, a department spokeswoman, said shortly before 11:30 a.m. that no one was in custody in connection with the shooting.
“Officers are still trying to figure out what happened,” Carr said, asking residents to avoid the area as the investigation continues.Fairfax County police said they had deployed a helicopter to help search for the gunman. Prince William County schools wrote in a tweet they were aware of the shooting, which they said occurred at a “community use event.” Prince William County Supervisor Yesli Vega in a Facebook post urged residents in the area to stay inside their homes.
