reported that TikTok had suppressed content from "special users" — like those with facial disfigurement, autism, visible birthmarks, who are fat, and those who are queer — as part of a policy meant to curb bullying on the platform. In a statement toa TikTok spokesperson confirmed that the company had enforced these rules "early on" as "a blunt and temporary policy" to prevent bullying.
"Early on, in response to an increase in bullying on the app, we implemented a blunt and temporary policy. This was never designed to be a long-term solution, but rather a way to help manage a troubling trend until our teams and user-facing controls could keep up," the spokesperson toldin an emailed statement.
