Karl-Anthony Towns scored 16 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to help the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 124-104 on Wednesday night.
The Timberwolves built their lead to 25 points in the second quarter and took a 67-46 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The Lakers, who went 0 for 10 in the first quarter and 2 for 21 from 3-point range in the first half, finally hit a few from deep after the break.
Westbrook made one and froze his follow-through hand in place while posing behind the arc for emphasis, bringing the Lakers within 73-64 with 6:03 left in the third quarter. D.J. Augustin drained a 3 at the third-quarter buzzer and dropped in a layup early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 89-85. Nearly every time the Lakers hit a big shot, though, they followed with a defensive lapse.
The Timberwolves fed off another lively crowd that has become more and more common this winter as they've come into their own on the court. With a 31-17 lead, they held the Lakers under 20 first-quarter points for the second time this season. Edwards took over for the second quarter by making all five of his 3-point tries, often with James guarding him. Patrick Beverley, who finished with 18 points, at one point swooped in to rip a rebound away from Carmelo Anthony and flip in a layup to make it 62-44.Lakers: Dwight Howard returned to the starting lineup after missing the last game for family reasons. He had just two points in 16 minutes.
Timberwolves: Jayden McDaniels, who sprained his left ankle in the previous game, will miss a minimum of two weeks before being re-evaluated. Naz Reid was listed as available to play but sat out for the second straight game after experiencing back spasms. ... With McDaniels and Reid out, backup big man Nathan Knight had four points and eight rebounds in 14 minutes.Copyright AP - Associated Press
