Class 4A Division I got a jolt in February when Argyle, Melissa and Midlothian Heritage moved up to 5A Division II in the UIL’s realignment. That removed...
After realignment shakeups saw three title contenders move to 5A-II, the region still boasts a number of top 10 teams in Texas including two defending champions.
Realignment paired defending 4A Division I state champion Stephenville with last year’s 4A Division II state champion, China Spring, in District 5-4A Division I. In addition to those two 16-0 teams, that five-team district also includes 2018 4A Division I state champion Waco La Vega, which reached the 4A Division I Region II semifinals in 2021.Dave Campbell’s Texas Football
Region II has produced three of the last four Class 4A Division I state champions, with La Vega and Stephenville joined by Argyle on that list. Stephenville, winner of six state titles, has regained its position as a state powerhouse after winning four state titles from 1993 to 1999 under then-coach Art Briles.
Celina returns star running back Gabe Gayton and quarterback Noah Bentley and appears to be the Dallas area’s most dominant 4A team with the departure of Argyle, Melissa and Midlothian Heritage. But coming off a 12-2 season, Celina now shares a region with Kennedale, Anna, Kaufman and Carter, which were a combined 33-11 in 2021. Celina could have to beat La Vega, China Spring and Stephenville in three straight playoff games just to win its region.
“It definitely changes the landscape of 4A Division I,” Celina coach Bill Elliott said of Argyle, Melissa and Midlothian Heritage moving up to 5A Division II. “They are three great teams. But when you look at the district down south, with La Vega and China Spring and Stephenville, we’ll probably catch them pretty early [in the playoffs], probably second and third round.”
