The Reds are giving the pill to veteran Luke Weaver, who has a 7.20 ERA with a 1.68 WHIP in 17 starts this year. The veteran has looked like the worst pitcher in the majors over the last couple of months, pitching to a 9.41 ERA and allowing opposing batters to slug .626 in nine starts since the beginning of June.
The analytics aren't kind to Weaver either, with his expected ERA , barrel rate , and expected slugging percentage all sitting in the bottom 10th percentile. That's music to the ears of Dodgers designated hitter J.D. Martinez who ranks in the top fifth percentile in barrel rate , hard-hit rate , and xSLG . Martinez is 22nd in the majors with 186 total bases and has been red-hot lately, slashing .347/.421/.694 over his last 12 games.
Martinez has faced Weaver just three times in his career but went 2-3 with a pair of home runs. Expect him to do damage against Weaver once again and bet the Over 1.5 total bases for the L.A. slugger.
