This is the second of three $1 toll increases to occur in the Bay Area over six years.

Traffic backs up at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toll plaza along Interstate 80 on July 25, 2019 in Oakland, California.Tolls at seven of the Bay Area's eight bridges are rising by $1 today, January 1.

Crossing the San Francisco-Oakland Bay, Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges will now cost drivers $7 . This is the second of three $1 toll increases to occur in the Bay Area over six years, with the first increase happening in 2019 and the final one going into effect on Jan. 1, 2025.

For vehicles with three or more axles, tolls will also increase by $1 today . Motorcycles, carpools and clean-air vehicles will still see a discounted toll during peak commuting times, although it will increase from $3 to $3.50. The fate of the money raised by the increased tolls, however, is still up in the air. Toll revenue is currently caught up in litigation after anti-tax group organization Howard Jarvis Tax Association sued to stop the toll increase, according to the. The case will be heard before the California Supreme Court. Until then — it could take months or years — the revenue from the toll increases is secured away in an escrow account. If the anti-tax group prevails, the money could be returned to drivers.
