A tangle of construction has made it difficult to navigate the street.Business owners struggling to stay afloat amid San Antonio’s maze of torn-up streets, barricades and traffic cones have been complaining about the lengthy infrastructure projects keeping customers from their doorsteps.
During a briefing Wednesday afternoon, City Council members expressed support for the grants and emphasized the importance of distributing the funds quickly. But some said they have heard from business owners that aid hasn’t come soon enough. “What matters most to me is that the businesses and the people who were there prior to the construction, prior to any improvements and investment, that they’re able to reap the benefits of those improvements,” McKee-Rodriguez said.Aaron Peña, who co-owns bars on the St. Mary’s Strip, said the grants are “a start, but it’s too little too late.”
Grants will range from $10,000 to $35,000, with applications scored based on business size, revenue loss and duration of the construction project. Businesses that already received $10,000 from a separate pandemic impact grant program can get up to $25,000. For a zone to be eligible, construction must have begun between Jan. 1, 2020, and June 30, 2022, and lasted longer than a year. The city outlined 15 such areas:Fredericksburg Road North New Braunfels Avenue West Commerce Street “My expectation … is that we deliver much-needed infrastructure projects on schedule,” said City Manager Erik Walsh. “It’s just like with anything else — we have to be in a position where we’re overly communicating before, during and after.
