Falcons senior Josh Chung ties for fourth individually at 4-under 67. Teammate Phillip Kench ties for sixth at 3-under 68
Torrey Pines High School’s quest for a 10th boys state golf championship will have to wait another year.
For the second year in a row Wednesday, the Falcons finished runner-up to Concord De La Salle at the CIF State Boys Golf Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.Teams are represented by six golfers with the low five scores counting. Torrey Pines senior Josh Chung tied for fourth individually at 4-under 67. Teammate Phillip Kench tied for sixth at 3-under 68.
Chung’s round included four birdies with no bogeys. Kench’s tour of Poppy Hills was more adventurous: one eagle, five birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey.Torrey Pines’ other scoring golfers were Colin Li , Jay Leng Jr. and Taiki Marsh . Torrey Pines has finished runner-up in the state the tournament the last three years it has been held. The Falcons’ last state championship came in 2018.
Four individuals from the San Diego Section advanced to the state championship. Those golfers were: San Pasqual’s Conner Williams ; Classical Academy’s Benjamin Zeiler ; San Marcos’ Justin Gill and Carlsbad’s Thomas Browning .
