A new grassroots business group called Touchdown Arlington Heights has emerged in support of the Chicago Bears' redevelopment of Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights.

A new group backing the Chicago Bears’ proposed $5 billion mixed-use megaproject at the site of the former Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights has emerged — as local and state leaders consider different pitches for funding the potential redevelopment.

The Bears welcomed support from the group, confirming team leaders have met with Touchdown Arlington and plan to attend another meeting with the group in the future. While the team has said it would pay for the stadium, they would be looking for public funding support for building infrastructure such as roads, utilities and stormwater management. Apartments, condominiums and other development planned for the site would be built by private developers — and could mean the added expense of more students for local schools.

Despite the uncertainties, the team’s arrival in Arlington Heights has kicked off waves of speculation and intense debate among village residents, business owners and political groups. “Effective communication is always good, so we are glad these types of initiatives are starting and can help communicate the hard work happening during the process,” he said.
