A February break-in at a Carmel home to steal $250,000 worth of jewelry is just one example of a growing trend. Here's what to know:
The house's glass door had been broken. In the master bedroom, ransacked dresser drawers hung open, jewelry boxes emptied, and several Louis Vuitton bags snatched.
Carmel isn't alone. At least one burglary in Fishers last year was attributed to"tourists burglars," and police say the threat is growing. These groups are also sophisticated, according to the FBI, and they closely watch their victims using devices such as AirTags, which are small gadgets that people use to keep track of their wallets, keys and other valuables. They often target Asian and Middle Eastern homes and businesses, believing they're likely to have large sums of cash and jewelry at their properties, the FBI said.
"In general, we as law enforcement, we respond to a complaint. We don't necessarily respond to a particular type of individual," Byrne said."It's not really said in a negative connotation ... and nothing really to do with the type of individuals that they are, just where they happen to be from."The work of"tourist burglars" was first reported in Fishers in 2018. The number of cases went up steadily throughout the following year, Nelson said.
One of the most recent break-ins in Carmel happened just before 8 p.m. on Feb. 25 in the 1100 block of Laurelwood. Stolen were three diamond rings, a diamond bracelet, a diamond pendant, a custom-made diamond necklace and several Louis Vuitton bags ― all worth about $250,000.
