WASHINGTON - U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Monday the Trump administration and Congress were getting close to a deal on raising the U.S. debt ceiling and he urged lawmakers to take action on the issue before leaving for an August recess.

In addition, Mnuchin and congressional leaders have been discussing a possible two-year budget deal that would set overall federal spending levels for fiscal 2020, which begins on Oct. 1, and for fiscal 2021, he told reporters during a briefing at the White House. That means the government could hit its credit limit just as Congress comes back into session in the fall if it does not reach a deal to raise the debt limit before then.
