Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, center, has his shot blocked by Los Angeles Lakers guard Patrick Beverley, left, as center Thomas Bryant defends during the first half of Wednesday’s game in Los Angeles.LOS ANGELES — Spurs coach Gregg Popovich predicted before Wednesday night’s 113-104 loss to the Lakers that LeBron James would rack up plenty of assists.
James’ near triple-double came in the second game of a back-to-back after he finished with 46 points in a 133-115 loss to the Clippers. The game marked the return of All-Star center Anthony Davis, who led the Lakers with 21 points in 26 minutes off the bench in his first game since Dec. 16. He missed the past 20 games with a stress fracture in his right foot after averaging 27.4 points and 12.1 rebounds.
Zach Collins finished with 16 points for the Spurs, who also had double-digit scoring contributions from rookie Jeremy Sochan , Keita Bates-Diop and rookie Malaki Branham .“The effort was there,” Popovich said. “We are getting better day by day. Just got to keep the faith and work on everything we need to shore up, and that’s a lot of different areas. But they are a willing group, great to work with, and we can’t get frustrated. We just have to keep going. That’s the only choice.
The Spurs, meanwhile, struggled to find the basket, making just 22.2 percent from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc.
