Military bases in Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Jordan will partake in this year’s PeachTree race.

—has sent shirts, bibs, and banners for its satellite events.A few groups totaling 1,500 runners will line up for the Peachtree Road Race, but they won’t be alongside the 60,000 in the starting area in Atlanta. They’ll be serving a various military bases in the Middle East.

Since 2004, Peachtree has offered virtual bibs to soldiers overseas, with anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 participating each year. Though it started in only Iraq, this year, races will be held on bases in Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Jordan.

The race isn’t simply run in both places. The logistics begin months in advance as Peachtree organizers work with representatives from the bases to provide race shirts, bibs, and start and finish banners. The only thing not included that Atlanta participants receive is a medal.“Being the point of contact for the military bases is probably one of favorite things about Peachtree,” Janet Monk, special projects manager for the Atlanta Track Club who organizes the military races, told.

The races are set to take place on July 3 to start the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Peachtree Road Race.Drew covers a variety of subjects for Runner’s World and Bicycling, and he specializes in writing and editing human interest pieces while also covering health, wellness, gear, and fitness for the brand.
