Troy University closed its controversial Chinese-funded Confucius Institute on Wednesday. The board cited a defense spending bill that gives universities an October deadline to close Confucius Institutes in order to remain eligible for DoD funding.

“Troy University’s strategic goals include continued growth and development as a research institution, which relies in part on access to federal funding, including from the Department of Defense,” said Dr. Lance Tatum, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, in a statement. “We feel it is in the best interest of TROY’s long-term vision to transition away from our partnership with the Confucius Institute.
Confucius Institutes have come under fire for several years because of their connection to China’s Communist government., claimed the centers “are nothing more than Communist Chinese Party propaganda and spying units.
