Does the achievement gap between rich and poor students really widen over the summer break? Researchers are looking afresh at an influential study that showed it does.
Nearly 40 years ago, researchers at Johns Hopkins University launched a seminal study of student achievement that identified what is now known as the “summer slide.”
The idea is that between school years, learning slows for all children, and the achievement gap separating the rich and poor grows increasingly large.
