Vance bested a field of seven to advance to the general election against Democrat Tim Ryan.
was enough to boost Senate hopeful J.D. Vance to victory in Tuesday night’s Ohio Republican primary for retiring GOP Sen. Rob Portman’s seat, according to Associated Press projections.
“The question presented in this primary was do we want to have a border that protects our citizens?” Vance said during his victory speech in Cincinnati. “Do we want to ship our jobs to China or keep them right here, in America for American workers and the American people?,” Vance said, name-checking the PAC that ran millions of attack ads against him highlighting his past anti-Trump comments.
“Ryan’s going to have a lot of money, and I don’t think he’s a great candidate,” Trump told Bruce Hooley on WTOH. " ... But we need somebody that’s gonna go out and win, and I thought J.D. won the debates very easily. And overall, I think he’s gonna be very good.” Vance came out early with the lead and continued to gain ground throughout the night. Unofficial results from the Ohio secretary of state’s office showed, as of 11:20 p.m. with nearly 99% of precincts reporting, Vance led with 32% of the vote, a cushion of more than 86,000 votes over his nearest opponent, Mandel, who had 24% of the vote.
Polling showed Dolan surging late, though apparently not enough to overcome Vance according to projections. As of 11:20 p.m., Dolan had logged around 23% of the vote. Portman’s anointed successor, former Ohio Republican Party Chairman Jane Timken, was the favorite of party insiders upon entering the race. She seemed well-positioned for a Trump endorsement, given he hand-picked her to lead the state party in 2017. But her initial refusal to condemn Rocky River Rep. Anthony Gonzalez – one of 10 GOP House members who voted to impeach Trump –is widely seen as contributing to his decision to look elsewhere.
