President Donald Trump’s surprise move to ban citizens of many European countries from travel to the United States shocked European leaders, and triggered a slump in global stock markets.
: The latest travel advice from the World Health Organization suggests that travel bans are not called for. “In general, evidence shows that restricting the movement of people and goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most situations and may divert resources from other interventions,” the WHO said in a statement at the end of February. It warns that in some cases travel restrictions could have adverse effects on aid, businesses, airlines and local economies.
