Trump has repeatedly said he wants to take action on guns, but he has yet to say what exactly he would support

President Donald Trump maintained Wednesday that he hopes to quickly see legislative action to address a spate of mass shootings, but he remained coy about what exactly he would support.

Fielding questions from reporters following a White House event on the opioid crisis, the president said that any gun reform proposal would need to be bipartisan.Trump also expressed hope that Congress’ imminent return following a month-long recess would bring an agreement “soon.” And he explained that he is reviewing “many different concepts and many different things” in response to recent shootings, “including mental health which is, to me, a very important element of it.

However, Trump did not rush to endorse a House-passed bill that would mandate universal background checks for all gun sales, and instead echoed a talking point of gun rights advocates. "If you look at some of — even the more severe and comprehensive ideas that are being put forward, it wouldn't have stopped any of the last few years' worth of these mass shootings," Trump claimed, despite reports that the suspect of a shooting this weekend in Odessa, Texas, may have acquired the rifle used in the rampage through a private sale after failing to pass a federal background check.

Gun control advocates have grown impatient with the lack of action in Washington, with some pinning the blame on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has in turn
