Former President Donald Trump kicked off his 2024 presidential campaign in Texas with a grievance-filled tirade aimed first at the lawyers who have probed his tax returns and his role in making alleged hush-money payments to a porn star.

People wait in line for the Make America Great Again rally at Waco Regional Airport in Waco, Texas, Saturday, March 25, 2023, as former President Donald Trump kicks off his 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump said nothing about Cruz in his hour-long speech, but had a few choice words for Republicans who haven’t endorsed him yet for president: “Don’t bother.” Ticking through a list of hot-button culture war issues, Trump also vowed to “keep men out of women’s sports” and “not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate or a mask mandate.” He also raised the idea of having parents elect school principals.

Cruz has been among Trump’s closest allies and fiercest defenders since the two duked it out in the 2016 GOP presidential primary. The Texas Republican, who had long been thought to be mulling a second White House bid, has passed another presidential run as he seeks a third term in the Senate.“If they didn’t endorse me, I said, don’t even come,” Trump said of the Waco event. “I have a few that said, we’re going to endorse you down the road. I said, don’t bother.

Refineries and oil producers were slow to rehire workers and restart rigs after the height of the pandemic. And many faced lingering supply chain constraints.“You know what caused inflation?" he said."Energy. restricted energy, he made it impossible to get. It went through the roof." According to Trump’s retelling, Jackson told him about a test he could take at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, but warned the test “gets pretty tough” after the first few questions, and “if you do badly, I don’t know if we’ll be able to shield it.He continued: “It was after that that nobody called me stupid anymore, it was very good,” Trump said. “I never liked that narrative. I don’t like the word stupid. But other people are very stupid.

In a twisting stream of insults, Trump claimed credit for DeSantis’ political success, said Florida had been “tremendously successful for many years, long before” DeSantis became governor, and called him a “disciple” of former U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Trump critic. Trump referred to the porn star to whom he allegedly made hush-money payments “horse face,” saying he did not have an affair.“I never liked horse face,” Trump said. “That wouldn’t be the one.”And he repeatedly referred to the Department of Justice as the “Department of Injustice.”

Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, is investigating a payment made by Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, to porn star Stormy Daniels in the lead-up to the 2016 election. The payment was intended to prevent Daniels from going public with allegations that she had an extramarital affairs with Trump years earlier, which he has denied.

The rally comes one week after the former president posted on social media that he expected to be arrested as New York prosecutors investigate the role he played in making alleged hush-money payments to a porn star. Polling from the University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Politics Project found Trump just 12 percent of Texas Republicans had an unfavorable view of him.

“He’s the champion. You’ve got to knock him out of the ring to win,” Patrick said. “And I don’t see him getting knocked out of the ring.”Trump’s plane had yet to land in Waco as of 5:30 p.m., 30 minutes after he was initially scheduled to speak at his rally. He is expected to arrive shortly, though it's unclear when he'll take the stage.

Earlier in the day, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz called out U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz for not having publicly backed the former president.former President Donald Trump’s declaration that he will soon be arrested to make pleas for campaign cash, promote his podcast and pitch his latest book, which he says predicted this moment.

People shield themselves from the sun as they wait for the Make America Great Again rally to start at Waco Regional Airport in Waco, Texas, Saturday, March 25, 2023.Before Waco, Trump held rallies in Conroe in January and in South Texas in October. Texans donated $1.5 million to the president’s campaign after the Conroe rally and more than $1 million more after the rally in Robstown, near Corpus Christi.

Reminding the crowd that he had made a cameo appearance in “1883,” the prequel spinoff to the show “Yellowstone,” Miller asked, “You know what I really like about Yellowstone, I found fantastic?” Trump's Waco visit and his message of the government coming for people arrive during the 30th anniversary of the 51-day Waco siege, in which federal law enforcement surrounded the compound of the Branch Davidians religious cult and eventually stormed it.
