Landlords can no longer reject applications from low-income tenants just because they use Section 8 housing vouchers or similar government aid to help cover the rent.

Landlords can still use other criteria such as criminal history and previous evictions in deciding who to rent to. They just can’t base their decisions solely on whether someone receives housing assistance. Ben Buehler-Garcia of Tucson, a spokesman for the Arizona Multihousing Association, a statewide trade group for the apartment industry, spoke against the measure, which he said would have little practical effect because many local landlords “are at 98% capacity. That means there are no rooms available regardless of your income status.”
