The USDA is predicting a turkey shortage for this year’s Thanksgiving holiday. That’s because supply is down -- 2 to 3 percent fewer birds than 2021 – while demand remains steady.
Wholesome Valley Farm in Wilmot, Ohio, is raising Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys for Thanksgiving. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- To further aggravate the supply-demand situation, grain prices are up, increasing the cost of turkey production. That could mean higher costs for the consumer.
Clatterbuck founded Fresh Fork Market CSA, runs Wholesome Valley Farm and is an owner of Ohio City Provisions in Cleveland. As background, he explains that the birds commonly found frozen at retail are known as broad-breasted whites which were bred into commercial use in the 1950s for their generously sized breasts. Before that Americans sought smaller birds that would fit better into an ice box.
