SYDNEY - The freshly elected lawmakers of the tiny Pacific country of Tuvalu are set to choose a prime minister against a backdrop of China’s efforts to erode the region’s traditional support for Taiwan.
The South Pacific has been a diplomatic stronghold for Taiwan, where formal ties with six of the 16 island nations make up more than a third of its total alliances. No date for the election of a new prime minister has been set, and the vote could take place any time in the coming weeks. Sopoaga, who has been prime minister since 2013, said in August that the island had no relations with China.
