Twitter will start verifying the accounts of all candidates running in 2020 congressional and gubernatorial party primaries — a move meant in part to counter worries that the social network's new ban on paid political ads hurts up-and-coming politicians
, but only for candidates on the general election ballot. Giving primary candidates the blue check mark conveys an advantage to a wider pool of political aspirants.In late October, Twitter announced that it was, a decision that came amid controversy over Facebook's refusal to police misleading and false political ads. But some critics of Twitter's new policy argued that it will harm grassroots candidates who don't enjoy the name recognition of incumbent politicians.
Verification could give the candidates an added boost of credibility while conveying structural advantages on Twitter. For example, verified candidate accounts will jump to the top of some search results, the company said. Verification is also thought to cut down on impersonation, a challenge for some public figures.
As in 2018, the tweets of verified candidates will also be stamped with a tiny icon, meant to resemble a government building, so that people seeing their posts will be able to immediately identify them as coming from an official candidate. Twitter put its general-public verification program largely on ice in 2017, over concerns that it lacked rhyme, reason or fairness. The company says the program is "currently being revamped," though it says it has continued verifying accounts where events warrant.
Twitter said it was working with the site Ballotpedia to identify which candidates quality for verification under the new plan.
