Past and present community leaders will be memorialized at the Lincoln Theatre's Walk of Fame next month.
At a ceremony next month, Reverend Leon Troy and the late Reverend Dr. James Poindexter will be inducted into the theatre's Walk of Fame which commemorates trailblazers in the community. Former Columbus mayor Michael Coleman and author Wil Haygood are among those previously inducted.
“Although many Walk of Fame inductees have a focus on the landscape of art making, representing clergy among our honorees acknowledges the quality and tools needed to create a canvas of spiritual and community leadership for the masses to connect, engage and model,” Lincoln Theatre executive director Suzan Bradford said. “The vision for their era and the lasting legacy of both Rev. Troy and Rev. Dr. Poindexter make them more than worthy of the Lincoln Theatre Walk of Fame.
Rev. Troy has served as pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Columbus for nearly 50 years, and has also served on multiple city commissions. In his time, Troy has led initiatives in access to food and education in the city, and he has also previously been inducted into the Franklin County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
Rev. Poindexter was the first African American to serve on the Columbus City Council, and also served four terms on the Columbus School Board in the 19th Century. An advocate for education and civil service, Poindexter gained national attention and was consulted by multiple leaders across the country from the local level to presidents for advice on issues faced by the U. S. at the time.Community members may attend the ceremony to memorialize Troy and Poindexter on July 29 at 7 p.m.
