An elderly couple died as a wind-fueled wildfire in New Mexico burned more than 200 homes and forced thousands of people to evacuate

Global satellite data indicate wildfires are becoming bigger and more intense. WSJ talks with NASA’s Doug Morton to understand the science behind what’s making the planet more flammable and making fires harder to control.

Noah Berger/Associated Presswind-fueled wildfire in New MexicoThe McBride Fire has scorched 5,736 acres with no containment since it sparked Tuesday afternoon in Ruidoso, N.M., less than 200 miles south of Albuquerque. Many of the 207 homes burned so far in the fire have been destroyed, said Kerry Gladden, public-information officer for the Village of Ruidoso. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
