Two people were detained but later released after five Denton schools were placed on increased security alert following unsubstantiated threats, police and school officials said Wednesday.Police tell us it began just after 9:30 a.m., when dispatchers received a call threatening violence at Denton High School.
“The caller demanded the evacuation of the building, or a shooting would take place,” police said. “Ryan High School was also believed to be impacted by this threat.”Video from Chopper 11 showed at least a dozen police cars at Denton High School, more than five at Denton Ryan, and four at Denton Guyer, which was put on soft lock out.Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Tests Positive For COVID-19
“During the investigation, one Denton High School student and a non-student at Ryan High School were detained for questioning,” police said. “Neither subject had weapons. The two individuals cooperated with investigators and have been ruled out as suspects. Detectives have also learned of at least two similar threats in other Texas cities and will continue to investigate leads in partnership with the FBI.
In addition to the high schools, Calhoun Middle and Newton Rayzor Elementary schools were placed on a soft lock out, Denton ISD spokesperson Julia Zwahr said. “We do not believe there is any threat to our students or staff at this time,” Zwahr said at the time. “At this time, all students and staff are safe in class.”“We understand these types of threats generate a great deal of fear and anxiety for everyone involved,” police said. “Despite this, students and staff meticulously followed lockdown protocol, which allowed officers to efficiently clear the buildings.
