People reportedly raced for the exits after claiming to hear gunshots, but police say there’s no evidence of a shooting.
, authorities said the stampede appears to have started after people thought they heard gunshots and rushed toward the exits. David Smith, chief for the Rochester Police Department, said at a news conference on Sunday that there was no evidence a shooting had occurred inside the venue.
“We are hearing many reports of potential causes, including crowd size, shots fired, pepper spray and more,” the police departmenton Twitter. “Preliminary reports from people at the scene indicate that these injuries were caused from being trampled. We do not have any evidence of gunshots being fired or anyone being shot or stabbed.”
One of the people who died has been identified by police as Rhondesia Belton. Belton was 33 and worked for the City of Buffalo Traffic Violations Agency, Mayor Byron W. BrownShe tragically lost her life yesterday while attending a concert in Rochester. Her family, friends, and colleagues are devastated and left to mourn this tragic loss.
