The attacks — and the ensuing lack of information about them — have prompted widespread fear among women at the Palo Alto campus.

Shortly after noon last Friday, a man grabbed a woman from her Stanford University office, dragged her into a basement and raped her.

“I was terrified,” said Trish Nova, 18, a freshman who received a campus safety alert about the Oct. 7 rape. “It was just really scary — it could happen to anyone. It’s exhausting to be on guard 24/7.” The first rape happened at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 9 when a woman was grabbed from a parking lot near Wilbur Hall, taken to a bathroom and raped by an unidentified man. The woman said she had seen the man on campus before and gave a description of him.

She suggested that the university has done too little in the past to respond to allegations of sexual assault, creating a chilling effect on women reporting assaults and a feeling that not enough will be done to hold perpetrators accountable.
