Tyler Skaggs' No. 45 was all around Angel Stadium Friday night.
Mike BrehmThe number of late pitcher Tyler Skaggs was on the mound, on a framed jersey that was carried onto the field for a pregame ceremony and on the backs of every player on the Los Angeles Angels.
Skaggs, 27, was found dead in his hotel room in Texas on July 1, and the team had been on the road or in the All-Star break since then. Friday night was the Angels' first home game since Skaggs' death, and they made sure he was properly honored, including a 45-second moment of silence and having his mom, Debbie Hetman, throw a perfect ceremonial first pitch.
Once the game started, Mike Trout, who wore Skaggs' number at the All-Star Game, led a strong first inning. Slotted second in the lineup, he hit a two-run home run and a two-run double as the Angels batted around and took a 7-0 lead against the Seattle Mariners.
