Teillet was brought in to lead an independent investigation after Dr. Carrie Bourassa, one of the country’s most prominent experts on Indigenous health, was placed on leave last year by the U of S and a federal research organization after . Bourassa later told the StarPhoenix she did not have evidence she was Tlinglit and was working to piece together part of her ancestry.Article content

Bourassa resigned from the U of S effective June 1. University president Peter Stoicheff confirmed in July that the U of S had received, but said it would not include specifics on Bourassa’s claims because she was no longer an employee of the university. The case ignited global media coverage and a national reckoning over academics falsely claiming Indigenous identity, apparently as a way of securing resources meant for Indigenous peoples and furthering their own careers. In her report, Teillet writes that a focus at the U of S since 2015 on creating more opportunities for Indigenous people unfortunately appears to have drawn fraudsters as well.
