Late winter to early spring temperature outlook is in and much of the U.S. will likely be warmer than average:
At a GlanceHowever, the Northwest and northern Rockies are expected to have a colder early spring.Much of the United States is expected to have a warmer than average early spring, according to the latest outlook from The Weather Company, an IBM Business.
The highest chance of a warmer end to winter and early spring stretches from central New Mexico into parts of Georgia and Florida. Areas from the Four Corners to the rest of the Southeast and into the mid-Atlantic are also expected to have a mild February through April.Areas from the Pacific Northwest and California coast into the Northern Plains and upper Midwest are expected to see a near-average or cooler February through April.
Parts of the Pacific Northwest into the northern Great Lakes and Northeast could see near-average and slightly cooler temperatures in April.Much of the forecast is driven by La Niña. As seen in the map below, La Niña is the periodic cooling of the equatorial Pacific Ocean waters, which can influence weather patterns across the globe, including in the U.S.
La Niña conditions have peaked, meaning we should start to see water temperatures in that region of the Pacific Ocean warm back up. However, the effects of La Niña on weather patterns can linger after the event has peaked, according to Todd Crawford, director of meteorology at Atmospheric G2.
