Under Trump admin.'s 'Remain in Mexico' policy, 240 asylum seekers have been turned around near San Diego and sent back to Mexico where they must wait until a US immigration judge can hear their case, Department of Homeland Security officials say.
The policy began at the San Ysidro port of entry, near Tijuana, but has expanded within the last week to include migrants crossing at additional ports of entry in the San Diego sector and at the Calexico, California port of entry.
A DHS official estimated the number of immigrants stopped crossing between the ports of entry to be less than 10. Two other DHS officials previously told NBC News that returning asylum seekers apprehended between legal ports of entry would be difficult because it would involve the cooperation of the Mexican government to shelter them. Officials on a call with reporters on Tuesday said they are transporting immigrants apprehended between ports of entry to border stations and returning them to Mexico from there.
The officials also told reporters that they have plans to expand the program to other parts of the border.
