The U.S. Senate voted on Wednesday to approve semiconductor legislation that would subsidize a massive Intel manufacturing plant planned for the Columbus area, in a sign the bill finally will clear a political logjam in Washington, D.C.

Both of Ohio’s senators -- Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown and Republican Sen. Rob Portman -- voted “yes” on the bill, which now heads to the Democratic-controlled House for final approval.

Despite bipartisan support for the CHIPS Act, the bill had stalled in Congress amid competing priorities and broader disagreements between Democrats and Republicans, who are able to block legislation in the Senate via the filibuster rule. Delays in the bill’s passage recentlyIntel officials have said regardless of whether the bill passes, they plan to move forward with plans to build a $20 billion facility in New Albany, near Columbus.

A news release from Brown’s office announcing passage of the CHIPS Act included a glowing statement from Geisinger, as well as from numerous top officials with colleges and universities, business groups and labor unions across the state.
