The University of California, Berkeley, uses a diversity, equity, and inclusion point system to weed out potential faculty members, according to documents obtained by a campus speech watchdog.

The documents were obtained by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression after a two-year-long battle with the school over a public records request, in the course of which the free speech organization threatened legal action if UC Berkeley did not produce the materials. The rubric assigns lower scores to applicants who demonstrate less commitment to DEI.

The rubric identifies three areas of focus for assessing an applicant's dedication to DEI: knowledge, track record, and plans for advancing the ideology. Preferred candidates, who score a 4-5, have a"consistent track record that spans multiple years" and that is spread throughout research and teaching, for example. Ideally, a candidate would have led a student organization that"supports underrepresented individuals."
