The senior wide receiver’s one-handed catch against Colorado was nothing new to those who know him best at St. John Bosco High and in Westwood.

“He’s been kind of a security blanket for all the quarterbacks,” UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. “They know where he is, he’s smart, he’s intelligent, he does a great job of running routes, he understands coverage.” The graduation of receivers Jake Bobo and Kazmeir Allen increased opportunities this season for Loya, who worked on his speed in the offseason to prepare for his senior year.
“My hands for catching, I definitely give that to my dad,” Loya said on the Two Nobodies podcast in late July. “I didn’t start wearing gloves until about eighth grade to high school year. I played quarterback and receiver. He was like, ‘You’re not throwing the ball with gloves, so you can’t wear them.’”
Negro saw a glimpse of that in the 2019 CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game. Bosco was down by 23 points at halftime against Mater Dei. Loya addressed his teammates in the locker room at the break.
