UH adds hockey as a club sport for first time in nearly a century, team hits the ice this fall
He has been an avid ice hockey fan since the Houston Aeros would play at the Toyota Center. And a few years after their departure, he started the account to root for another team in the city.
As exciting as the college team is for hockey viewers, it's equally as exciting for a younger generation that will have somewhere to play after high school, if they plan to attend college in Houston. Hayden Victoria has played hockey in Houston since he was 6 years old. At 16, he runs the nonprofit Houston Youth Hockey.Calderone said Hayden Victoria, a student at Collegiate High School at College of the Mainland and president of, has been another big supporter of the team. Victoria founded the youth hockey organization in 2020, starting as a community service project for school. It has since grown to a nonprofit that provides information on youth hockey in Houston.
He says he was fortunate enough to start playing hockey at six years old but wants to make the sport more accessible to Houston kids.In Houston, hockey players often go up to high school, Victoria said. But with the new UH league, he says young adults will get to continue playing competitively. He sees the UH team is an opportunity to show hockey can work in Houston.
"This UH hockey program is a stride that I think is going to build up the hockey scene in Houston," Victoria said."It truly takes ambitious people to grow something, and James and UH hockey are definitely growing the sport here."
