UH profs: How a Texas DEI ban would make it harder to get mental health care
, a designated Hispanic-serving and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution — our top-notch faculty colleagues have come to better reflect the student body. Through years of DEI efforts, 43 percent of our faculty colleagues are people of color. Many of our faculty and students have journeyed on similar paths to those of our clients and the communities in which we are tasked to work.
Social work is often undervalued and under-resourced in today’s society. The preparation students undergo to show up for someone from a different walk of life in Stheir time of need requires an analysis of oppression, power and justice, as well as development of authentic empathy that helps another person feel understood, valued and supported.
To effectively prepare our students to help address Texas’ monumental mental health needs, diversity, equity and inclusion must be core components of our social work curricula and teaching. In fact,require this, as do the varying mental health needs of our diverse region and state.
Legislation under consideration in Texas that proposes to eliminate DEI and tenure threatens social work faculty’s freedom to teach according to their expertise. More importantly, it threatens students’ ability to feel welcome and valued – that their stories and experiences are critical parts of the learning experience and make them successful far beyond their diplomas.
